Surface.Tension is about seeing what I see when I enter the water with a camera. A form of relaxation, I try to slow down time by capturing the textures, movements and colour of the oceans surface in a split second.

From sunrise to sunset, calm conditions to storms, Surface.Tension shows you what you can’t see from land or water. With narratives to put you in the spot, how I’m feeling and what I feel, see how shots are captured, see the people who look through viewfinders to see this foreboding world of water and elements.

All the shots in Surface.Tension have been taken by the author, me, John Harney (except for the portrait of myself by Ray Stone). over a period of near on 3 years along the local Perth coast with the odd trip down south for some bigger waves action. As will most ocean photographers, I use over the counter DSLR cameras to capture the images using custom housings.

Who is the book for?

Firstly fans of my work
Anyone interested in photographic art
Ocean lovers
But mostly anyone who wants to be taken away from everyday life to a place they might never go to but secretly wished they could.

Leave it on your coffee table for other to see, sit back on a quiet evening, a glass of wine by your side, and let me take you to another place, my special place, and let me show why the ocean and photography is the best therapy there is.
